There’s something about walking with a dog along the west coast of Scotland that makes the world feel both bigger and simpler at the same time. In this episode, “Ocean Views,” I’m sharing a quiet stretch of soul searching that unfolded beside the sea, with my dog trotting happily ahead and the Atlantic doing what it does best: reminding me to slow down, breathe, and pay attention. The coastline here has a way of stripping life back to what matters, and on this walk, the ocean views seemed to hold all the answers I didn’t even know I was looking for.

The first thing that struck me was the sheer scale of the landscape. The cliffs, the open water, the long sweep of sky, and the wind moving constantly through it all created a kind of honesty that’s hard to find anywhere else. When you’re standing there with nothing between you and the horizon but salt air, your thoughts start to rearrange themselves. Problems that felt heavy at home seem smaller against the rhythm of the waves. It wasn’t that my worries disappeared, but they softened. The ocean views gave me perspective, and perspective can be a powerful kind of comfort.

Walking with my dog added another layer to the experience. Dogs don’t rush through a moment the way people often do. They stop to sniff the grass, watch the gulls, and seem completely content with the simple fact of being outside. Watching that reminded me how often I forget to be present. My dog wasn’t interested in the bigger questions I was carrying; he was interested in the path, the smells, the breeze, and the next little adventure. In that way, he became a kind of guide, pulling me back into the moment whenever my mind tried to wander too far ahead.

There was also something healing about the silence between the sounds of the coast. The crash of the waves, the calls of birds, and the occasional crunch of boots on the path all blended into a soundtrack that felt ancient and steady. Out there, I found myself thinking about change, loss, and the strange way life keeps moving whether we’re ready or not. The west coast of Scotland has weathered centuries of storms, and yet it remains beautiful. That felt important. It was a reminder that resilience doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like standing still, carrying on, and letting the wind pass through you.

By the time the walk came to an end, I felt lighter, not because everything was solved, but because I’d made space to listen to myself. That’s what these ocean views offered me: not a perfect answer, but a calmer way of asking the question. The sea has a way of meeting you where you are, and on this day, it met me with honesty, patience, and a sense of peace I didn’t know I needed.

If you’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed, a little stuck, or simply in need of a reset, I hope this episode reminds you that sometimes the best thing you can do is step outside, keep walking, and let the landscape do some of the talking. The coast is waiting, the waves are moving, and there’s always another horizon to look toward.
