Moving your ebook library can feel like packing up a room full of books—except the shelves are spread across apps, devices, and online accounts. Whether you’re changing e-readers, switching services, or simply organizing your collection, a little planning makes ebook migration much smoother. The goal is not just to move files, but to preserve the books, notes, and details that make your library useful.
Start by taking inventory. Check where your books are stored: on a device, in an app, on a computer, or in a cloud account. Make a list of the services you use and note which books you bought, borrowed, or added yourself. This matters because purchases and library loans may be tied to a particular account or platform. Before making changes, confirm that you can still sign in to those accounts and download the books you’re entitled to access.
Next, understand the formats and restrictions involved. EPUB and PDF files are widely used, while some stores and devices rely on their own formats or account-based access. A file that opens on one app may not work on another, especially if it has digital rights management, or DRM. Follow the retailer’s or library’s supported transfer options, and don’t assume a purchased book can be freely moved between platforms. If you’re unsure, check the service’s help pages before deleting anything or closing an account.
Protect your collection before you migrate it. Make a backup of any ebook files you’re allowed to download and keep a copy in a safe location, such as an external drive or a trusted cloud service. Preserve useful information too: author names, series order, cover images, and your own notes or highlights, if the app lets you export them. Good metadata makes a large collection easier to search and helps prevent books from becoming an anonymous pile of files.
Move a small sample first rather than transferring everything at once. Choose a few books in different formats, then open them on the destination device or app. Check that the text displays correctly, chapters and links work, and any notes you care about have come across. If you’re moving between e-readers, also look at font settings, syncing, and how the new platform handles your reading progress. A short test can reveal a format problem before it affects your entire library.
Finally, keep the old setup available until you’re confident the new one works. Don’t wipe a device, cancel a subscription, or remove files just because the first books appear on the new screen. Give yourself time to compare collections and confirm that important titles are accessible. Ebook migration is less about rushing every file into a new home and more about making sure your reading can continue without surprises.
